Despairing Companionship Essay Example for Free
Despairing Companionship Essay ââ¬Å"Modern Love,â⬠a poetic sequence by George Meredith, describes a skeptical opinion on the idea of modern love. Meredithââ¬â¢s devastating tone, complex similes and metaphors, and dark imagery convey a sad and regretful outlook on the love of this time. ââ¬Å"Modern Loveâ⬠is riddled with a tone full of regret and heartache, making this modern love seem more like the opposite of love. The speaker says ââ¬Å"she wept with waking eyesâ⬠and her ââ¬Å"strange low sobsâ⬠were ââ¬Å"strangled mute.â⬠The words describing this woman are full of grief, full of ââ¬Å"vain regret. â⬠Her husband is painfully aware of his wifeââ¬â¢s sadness, through her reaction to ââ¬Å"his handââ¬â¢s light quiver by her headâ⬠and her sobs that were ââ¬Å"dreadfully venomous to him.â⬠The speakerââ¬â¢s worried tone shows how much the husband wishes for his wife to be happy, but his actions of loving care and cautiousness do nothing to quell her tears. This makes modern love seem hopeless and full of despair for both the man and his distraught wife. Use of intense simile and metaphor throughout ââ¬Å"Modern Loveâ⬠also demonstrates a grim view on the concept of modern love. The muffled cries of the wife are called ââ¬Å"little gaping snakesâ⬠showing how afraid and vulnerable the husband is to them. The manââ¬â¢s wife has a ââ¬Å"Giant heart of Memory and Tearsâ⬠which shows the heavy, almost useless organ that the wife carries around within her, empty of love, only able to remember the sadness to which she has been subjected to. Then, the husband and wife are said to be ââ¬Å"like sculpture effigiesâ⬠in their ââ¬Å"common bed,â⬠lying ââ¬Å"stone-still.â⬠Instead of two lovers talking to each other and loving each other in their bed, a place shared between the two of them, they are ââ¬Å"movelessâ⬠and silent. This makes modern love seem empty of joy, empty of companionship, and devoid of love. ââ¬Å"Modern Loveâ⬠also utilizes imagery to portray the sadness and tension of modern love. The wife is described as lying ââ¬Å"stone-still.â⬠They are both ââ¬Å"movelessâ⬠as they look back through their ââ¬Å"dead black years.â⬠Their life is described as ââ¬Å"black,â⬠which provides the image of nothingness, as if there is no memory worth seeing. Their modern love provides no light with which their lives might be made happy. They are seen as ââ¬Å"sculptured effigies,â⬠wishing for the ââ¬Å"sword that severs all.â⬠Instead of wishing for a good relationship or positive time together, they want something to end their marriage, to end the one thing that ties them together. This modern love is not love at all, but a forced binding between two people who want nothing of it. The poetic sequence ââ¬Å"Modern Loveâ⬠by George Meredith conveys a dark and regretful view of modern love through heartbreaking tone, deep similes and metaphors, and intense imagery.

Computer Engineering :: Essays Papers
Computer Engineering Computer engineering is a relatively new field of engineering and is one of the fastest growing fields today. Computer engineering is one of todayââ¬â¢s most technologically based jobs (Basta 71).The field of computer engineering combines the knowledge of electrical engineering and computer science to create advanced computer systems. Computer engineering involves the process of designing and manufacturing computer chips processors, memory systems, central processing units, and of peripheral devices . Computer engineers work with CAD(computer aided design) programs and different computer languages so they can create and program computer systems (Gelenter 82). Computer engineers use todayââ¬â¢s best technology to create tomorrowââ¬â¢s. Computer engineers require a high level of training and intelligence to be skilled at their job. A bachelors degree from a college or university with a good computer engineering program computer science program is necessary (Basta 71). Then once employed their usually is a on the job type of training program to learn the certain types of systems that will be designed and manufactured. Computer engineers major studies conventional electronic engineering, computer science and math in college. The electrical engineering knowledge that a computer engineer possesses allow for a understanding of the apparatus that goes into a computer so that they can be designed and built (UCSD 2). The computer science part gives a engineer much needed wisdom on how software makes a computer system run and perform tasks. There are a few different types of employers computer engineers could work for today. The first is for a major computer company actually designing whole computer systems for say Compaq or Macintosh. Then their are the type that works for computer components such as peripheral systems and microchips such as Intel (Gelenter 90). Then their are the engineers that design everyday electronic components such as bank machines and cell phones. The job outlook of computer engineering is very good. More and more computer systems are being created every day and the demand for computer engineers is just going to keep on growing (UCSD 1). For example Chris Kolnik (who is studying to become a computer engineer) says that their is no end in sight to the growth the computer industry.

HPE â⬠Tennis Research Assignment Essay
By using my knowledge and understanding of skill acquisition principles, psychology of learning and biomechanics, I have produced a six-week tennis training program. Incorporated in this report are the types of feedback used, the research laboratories carried out, and the design, analysis and evaluation of my coaching program.à Research Laboratoriesà Three research laboratories (See Appendices A, B and C) were carried out to assist in the development of my coaching program. These laboratories were on different types of feedback, the importance of accurate feedback and the use of feedback in mental rehearsal. The results from these labs provided me with a guide as to which type and the amount of feedback needed for a successful coaching program. Background Overviewà Types of Feedbackà There are many different types of feedback that can be used to enhance oneââ¬â¢s performance. Generally, ââ¬Å"the more precise the feedback, the more accurate the performance will become.â⬠(Amezdroz, G., Davis, D., Dickens, S., Hosford, G., 1999, 2001. Queensland Senior Physical Education, Macmillan Education Australia, South Yarra, Australia.) The types of feedback used in my coaching program were: Knowledge of performance-general performance ââ¬â this was used for the early stage of my coaching program when I needed a clear picture in my head to compare my actual performance with, eg. correct stance when serving. This type of feedback was provided to me by the coach, teacher and/or fellow participants in my program. I also watched my performances on video so I actually saw where I was going wrong and could then work on my motor skills. Positive feedback ââ¬â this was given when I successfully completed a task. Positive feedback encouraged me to try again and persevere with the learning. This was used throughout the whole duration of the coaching program.à Knowledge of performance-specific ââ¬â this was used in the later stage of my program. When I completed executing a movement or skill I was told on what I was doing wrong, and what to do to improve on my performance, eg. my ball toss was too low and I would therefore rush to hit the ball or simply miss it. By throwing the ball higher I give myself ample time to raise the racquet to hit the ball. Knowledge of performance gave me more detailed technical information to improve my skills. Concurrent (continuous) feedback ââ¬â this was, as the name states, a continuous form of feedback given throughout the coaching and practice sessions.à Augmented (external) feedback ââ¬â this type of feedback was provided both visually and verbally. I viewed a video of my performance and analysed what I was doing in/correct.à Design and Analysis of Coaching Programà At the beginning of my training I was at the late Cognitive stage of learning. I had little experience and knowledge of the game of tennis. During the six weeks of training I learnt and began to understand the skills needed and the rules of the game. I have now progressed through to the early Associative stage as demonstrated by my ability to effectively serve in both courts. The coaching program was based on distributive practice. This is where I would have short, practice sessions of a skill followed by a short break. For example, after doing 10 serves in both right and left court I was given a 2 minute break. During the break I would visualise in my head, the skills I had just learnt, and then the correct way to execute it. After the rest interval I would then carry out the skills. Improvements could be seen by me placing 50% of first serves and 75% of second serves in court. Whole-part learning was incorporated into the coaching program. This is when I would learn the whole skill at once, then break it down and concentrate on certain components that I was having difficulty with. Eg., learning to serve in tennis:à 1. An explanation and demonstration on how to serve the ball was givenà 2. I carried out the serve like I had been shownà 3. The serve was broken down into each skill associated with it that I was having problems with. Ie, stance, ball toss.à 4. Each skill was then learnt and completed with successà 5. All skills were then put together and a full serve was executed Mental rehearsal was also a very important factor in improving my tennis performance. By ââ¬Ëzoning outââ¬â¢ before a training session I would allow myself to block out all factors including spectators, noises, etc., and concentrate fully on the task at hand. An example of one of the main mental rehearsal activities I undertook was bouncing the tennis ball 2-4 times before serving. The research laboratories carried out gave an indication on why the types of practice and feedback I incorporated in my program would be more useful than any others. For example, a lab indicated that the more precise feedback we were given, the greater improvement we made on our performances.

Should You Discuss a Low GPA in Your Admissions Essay
The purpose of the graduate admissions essay is to permit admissions committees a glimpse of the applicant apart from his or her grade point average and standardized test scores. The admissions essay is your chance to speak directly with the committee, explain why you are a good candidate for graduate study, and why you are a good match for their graduate program. Beware of Sharing However, the opportunity to write an essay for the admissions committee is not an invitation to share all of the intimate details of your life. Committees may view providing too many private details as an indicator of immaturity, naivete, and/or poor professional judgment - all of which can send your graduate application to the slush pile. Ã When to Talk about Your GPA In most cases, your best bet is to focus on your strengths and not discuss your grade point average. Avoid drawing attention to the negative aspects of your application unless you can balance them with positive factors. Discuss your GPA only if you intend to explain specific circumstances, courses, or semesters. If you choose to discuss weaknesses such as a low GPA, consider how the circumstances surrounding your low GPA will be interpreted by the admissions committee. For example, explaining poor grades for one semester by briefly mentioning a death in the family or serious illness is appropriate; however, an attempt to explain four years of poor grades is not likely to be successful. Keep all excuses and explanations to a minimum -- a sentence or two. Avoid drama and keep it simple.Ã Some applicants explain that they dont test well and therefore their GPA is not indicative of their ability. This is not likely to work as most graduate programs entail many tests and the ability to perform well under such circumstances is valued. Seek Guidance Before you discuss your GPA within your graduate admissions essay seek the advice of a professor or two. Do they think its a good idea? What do they think of your explanation? Take their advice seriously - even if it is not what you hoped to hear. Above all, remember that this is your chance to present your strengths and really shine, so take advantage of the opportunity to discuss your accomplishments, describe valuable experiences, and emphasize the positive.
